You Are What You Eat!
You Are What You Eat!

Vegetables

We ourselves are behind of many of our own health problems. How many times have we slouched in front of the TV or PC and munched away on our food only to complain of indigestion and acidity the next morning? Remember when you binged at a party and then complained of putting on weight, or when you threw caution to wind during the holidays and ate away to glory, only to moan about obesity and high cholesterol after the holidays were over?

We should accept the fact that we are what we eat. If you eat oily, high-calorie food, then don't expect to be able to wear pretty clothes and remain trim. If you love your mandatory post-dinner routine of ice cream or lemon tart, then say hello to cavities, diabetes and so on. I know of a friend who ate takeaways for a whole year; he was busy completing his graduation and didn't want to "waste time" cooking. He did get decent graduation results but now, even 10 years down the line, he is dealing with high cholesterol.

You don't have to resist these temptations all the time. You don't have to live like a hermit or adopt the diet of a 70-year-old senior citizen. Here are some quick, practical ways to adopt a healthy diet without foregoing the taste.

Rule 1: Go Raw
Eat a bowl of raw vegetables at least twice a day. If that means getting up fifteen minutes early or purchasing a food slicing gadget, then do so without hesitation.

Rule 2: Plan Your Purchases
For that, you will need to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables at least once a week. On your way home from work, make a detour to the local supermarket. It will only take 20 minutes of your time and add a tiny bit more to your weekly food budget. But you will do yourself a lot of good. If you find it convenient to do this at lunchtime or while you go for a jog in the morning, then schedule it in your plan.

Rule 3: Do the Do-able
Don't make the mistake of buying expensive imported citrus fruits or yucky okra. Buy the fruits that you like to eat, even if they are just bananas and apples. Buy vegetables that are easy to store and simple to cook. Don't carry 10 pounds of potatoes home, because the next time you won't feel like buying them in the first place.

Rule 4: Stick to Your POA
Even if you spend more money and time on your food, be determined to stick to this plan of action (POA). If you binge on a takeaway once in a while, don't beat yourself up. Go back to your healthy diet with more determination.
