Why NRO - National Reconciliation Ordinance
The National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), termed as most notorious act of Constitution, was issued by the former president of Pakistan General (retd) Pervez Musharraf on October 5, 2007.

It granted amnesty to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats who were accused of corruption, embezzlement, money-laundering, murder and terrorism between 1st January 1986 and October 12th 1999, the time between two Martial Laws. The NRO states:

"Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in sub-section(1), the Federal Government or a Provincial Government may, before the judgment is pronounced by a trial court, withdraw from the prosecution of any person including an absconding accused who is found to be falsely involved for political reasons or through political victimization in any case initiated between 1st day of January, 1986 to 12th day of October, 1999 and upon such withdrawal clause (a) and clause (b) of sub-section (1) shall apply."

The current Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, suspended this ordinance on October 12, 2007. But he was soon dismissed after Musharraf abrogated the constitution on November 3, 2007. The new Chief Justice, Abdul Hameed Dogar revived the NRO on February 27, 2008.

Reasons
It has been widely believed that the act was a measure to allow the Late Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto to return to Pakistan without any legal consequences due to pending corruption cases. However, Musharraf had claimed that it was necessary to build a reconcilliatory theme in the political arena with the removal of such politically motivated cases. Musharraf stated in an interview that cases had been in the courts for a decade without any judgement being passed and were hampering political progress of virtually all political parties

I think the current debate about NRO is a conspiracy to bring Mr Asif ali Zardari down.It is all electronic and print media game. They think they can evit Mr Zardari from President house through media trial.Mr Nawaz Sharif is doing politics after 2007 because of NRO.If Mr kiyani comes into power,it will be all media's fault.

Hi Guys,

As you can see, I'm from India

I'd like to know about this bill

Can anyone explain to me in one or two lines

Is it a bill that can be used to pardon criminals and corrupt officials by the president?

If so, that's extremely bad for Pakistan

If you have done any crime between 1986 and 1999, join Politics...
Voila, you are innocent, you have full amnesty.

How foolish..! Its like If your foot is paining, cut it off. Like if cases on politicians are a problem, get rid of them... RIDICULOUS.

NRO was a black law installed to benefit "Self", fire shorts using others shoulders. The target to shower blessings through NRO was merely a few, in the process; however, many had the chance to wash themselves clean in satanic water. Peoples from across the board are now watching what comes up from the Supreme Court, this case is indeed an acid test for our judiciary. I pray they do justice and come out gaining respect from the silent majority.

If one is a politician and fortunately P.M. , C.M. or President; he cans mold the judiciary and system and use as a laundery in his own favor to wash out all the crimes and corruptions.see the example of P.M.(Gilani) who was cleaned by illigal suspecious islamabad high court and his wife was cleaned due to govt. pressure on NAB officials to withdraw the cases.similarly the case of President, who blocked the system forcefully to stop proceedings against him for long time and can say "cases are not proved/suuported by evidence.....and so on.......
how these reports of "AAJ KA AKHBAAR" DATED 20-11-09 be understood ??????????

It might be a litmus test of our Supreme court but it is also upto us as a nation to hold these people from their"Garebaans" & get back what belongs to us as a Nation. We shouldn,t cxreate a division amongst us to defend or support all these corrupt ones. They are our common culprits as a nation. We shouldn,t be naives to let them go away scott free. Our priority should be our National interests & not our own personal petty benefits/interests,political affiliations & personal likes/dislikes.If we have to prove that we are a nation & that also living one than we have to take all the meassure to recover our stollen wealth, punish them as well stop their way in the future. They are indeed National Robbers inspite Nationa "Rahbar"(Raasta Dikhane Waale).

Let the apex court of the country decide n those found guilty will get punished by the court. its a good process of accountability so we should wait otherwise adventurers may take another chance to derail the democratic process, yes, those who r accused should seize holding public offices at least morally they should establish good examples.

well we can finally lay the argument to rest, it has been declared unconstitutional:

....

now we can move forward and start acting on these criminal cases which were unethically and immorally removed.
it is only for the courts to decide whether they were politically motivated or not, not for the politicians themselves who just make sweeping statements and expect the public to believe them.
