Shah Mehmood Qureshi - profile & pictures
Shah Mehmood Qureshi

Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Hussain Qureshi was born in June 22, 1956 in Murree. He is the current Foreign Minister of Pakistan in the coalition government of PPP, ANP and JUI-F formed after the 2008 general elections. He is a senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, where he was the president of PPP Punjab.

Childhood and Early Education

Qureshi belongs to a well respected, wealthy feudal family based in the Saraiki-speaking belt of Multan. He is the son of Makhdoom Sajjad Hussain Qureshi, a former Governor of Punjab during PM Junejo's federal government from 1985-1988. He is also the Sajjada nashin of the shrine of Bahauddin Zakaria in Multan.

Qureshi received his early education from Aitchison College, Lahore and did his bachelors from FC college, Lahore. He went on to receive a Masters' degree in law from the University of Cambridge. He has two daughters, Gauhar Bano and Meher Bano, and a son, Zain.

Political career

Qureshi stayed as a Member of Punjab Provincial Assembly from 1985 to 1993, until he received a ticket to the National Assembly. His father was Governor of Punjab at the time until 1988, under the military regime of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. He has been an MNA since, only being defeated in 1997 losing to his fierce rival Javed Hashmi, while defeating him in 2002 and 2008. Being a minister under Benazir Bhutto's government, he maintained a very clean record. He is a dynamic leader with extensive following among the young. He is the head of the Qureshi family and has many followers in the country. He was a Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the second Benazir Bhutto government from December 1994 to November 1996.

Following the February 2008 elections, Qureshi was also a candidate to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan, until Yousaf Raza Gillani was sworn in on March 25, 2008. On March 31, 2008, Qureshi became the Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.

Qureshi has spoken outright about several key issues in Pakistani politics such as military dictatorship and the role of feudalism.

Minister of Foreign Affairs (2008 - Present)

After taking charge of the office, Qureshi immediately made clear that he was committed to establishing peace in the region and that maintaining friendly ties with neighboring India were amongst his top priorities. Qureshi recently went on his first visit as foreign minister to China with Ahmad Mukhtar and President Asif Ali Zardari. On his arrival back, he was given praise for his work. Qureshi has visited many states as Foreign Minister and has been very busy explaining Pakistan's stance on the war on terror to the foreign world.

An agriculturalist by trade, Qureshi is also the president of the Farmers Association of Pakistan.
