Samina Peerzada - profile, interview & pictures
Samina Peerzada

Samina Peerzada was born on 9 April 1955. She is a Pakistani television, film actress, and a director who has appeared in numerous films and television serials.

Early life

Peerzada was born as Samina Butt to Moinuddin Butt and Almas Butt in Lahore. Her father is a mechanical engineer. She did her graduation in Commerce. During her academic years, she took an active part in extracurricular activities. When she showed an inclination toward acting, both her parents supported her in adopting it as a profession.

In 1976, she starred her film Nazdikiyan. This was followed by many films, including Bazaare Husn and Khawahish. She has a long list of television plays to her credit, among them the popular are Raat and Hisar. She has also performed on stage for such successful productions as Raaz-o-Niaz and Gurya Ghar.

As director

Now, she has become one of the more promising directors hailing from Pakistan's film industry based in Lahore. She initially directed a string of successful television productions, such as Sophia and Karb for Pakistan Television, but later chose to move to the celluloid world with her rather controversial directorial debut, Inteha, a film in which she also had a short role. Inteha was well received in the major urban centers of Pakistan, and paved way for Peerzada to direct Shararat, a film which lacked the slick urban look which people related Peerzada's films with.

Current projects

She has in recent years put cinema on the back-burner and has instead chosen to act in a number of television serials for the plethora of relatively new Pakistani cable / satellite channels. However, Peerzada returns to cinema with Saqib Malik's directorial debut Ajnabee Shehr Mein where she stars alongside Shaan and Ali Zafar. The film is expected to release sometimes this year.

Peerzada has returned to acting in Pakistani television plays such as Sheeshay Ka Mahal, Kaanch, and Ghar Gharonda.

Personal life

In 1975, she married Usman Peerzada, also an actor, who encouraged her career. She has two daughters, Anum and Amal Peerzada.

International awards

She has traveled widely, performed in Oslo in an Ibsen festival, and won many awards, including two presidential awards for her films and two Graduate Awards for her work on stage.

Social and Women work

Recently, Samina Peerzada was invited by Amnesty International India in New Delhi for International Week of Justice Festival, from December 510, 2008, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Peerzada participated in three public forums for the festival at Jamia Millia Islamia and Alliance Francaise on the issues of women empowerment, democracy and torture.

Samina Peerzada, one gorgeous woman, calls herself a survivor. I have never thought of ageing as a hindrance in my career, says the vivacious actor/compere. It only becomes an obstacle if you make it one.

Explaining further, Peerzada says, I consider growing old to be a positive experience because you learn more about life and its truths. Besides, I learned early on in life to wait patiently for things or rewards to come by. Therefore patience is the key.

Peerzada has had her fill of pain and disappointments, too, though the big bright smile on her face and a chirpy voice tend to defy her problems. She has come a long way in her career, starting as a model then making her way into mainstream acting, working for television, theatre and films, and also trying her luck in directing movies.

Samina Peerzada is a campaigner these days for early detection of breast cancer, a disease that she believes has affected many women in Pakistan due to lack of personal care and attention to well-being.

Despite severe setbacks, she has never let herself drift into pessimism, and she considers this her greatest strength. I have had my share of stumbling blocks in life but I have this great ability to spring back and come around which is really important.

You can either end up cribbing about everything in life or celebrate yourself for having whatever you have. It is the little child inside you who keeps you exploring new things, learning more about the world and life. That little child in me also keeps me on my feet.

Though Samina Peerzada has successfully climbed the ladder with her potential and a positive attitude, she deems the little things in life more important. I shuttle between two cities, Karachi and Lahore, due to a demanding career, but I do try to make it a point to be there for everybody my husband, two daughters, in-laws, parents, friends and family. As a young woman I used to put people instantly in black and white but as I grew older, I realised that people are multifaceted and that you only have to stop, notice and listen patiently.

Samina Peerzada wants women to celebrate themselves, as they are the most important factor in the creation of the world. We bring colour to the world and prevent the mundaneness of life and should consider ourselves important and give ourselves a break from monotony perhaps a facial or a manicure or a pedicure to maintain our general well-being. Besides, praying five times a day is the perfect way of keeping a regimen and keeping some time to ourselves.

For a healthy upkeep, women should have a constant intake of calcium and get some light cardiovascular exercise to stay fit even in later age, she says. I never had the time to exercise when my daughters were young, but I did walk almost everyday. I still try to keep it up despite a hectic schedule.

Peerzada's perfect recipe to a positive outlook is to have a passion in life. It could be anything that fulfils you and drives you in life.
