Loadshedding is a form of terrorism, says Shahbaz Sharif
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday asserted that loadshedding was a form of terrorism, and the country’s corrupt leadership had made the lives of ordinary people truly miserable. He also said that in order to rekindle the country’s light, the lamp of "Ali Baba and his forty thieves" would have to be extinguished.

Presiding over a meeting at his camp office at the Minar-e-Pakistan to discuss the supply of water, Shahbaz blasted the rulers for their criminal negligence and for allowing the circular debt to reach Rs400 billion in the space of just four years. He said those protesting against the incessant power outages were fully justified, and he supported them and was ready to sacrifice his life for the masses.

The chief minister said the rulers were mistaken in thinking they could resolve the issue of circular debt simply by printing more currency notes. He maintained that the people could see through their designs and would reject this “favour.” He further claimed that the masses were desperate to get rid of looters and plunderers.

Shahbaz Sharif said during the energy conference held in Lahore, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani had promised that a unified loadshedding schedule would be enforced throughout the country. He castigated the prime minister for backtracking on his word, and said that a discriminatory and hypocritical attitude was being shown to the Punjab on loadshedding, which would not be tolerated any longer.

The chief minister also announced that arrangements were being made to supply water via water tankers in a bid to meet peoples’ daily requirements. He said the provincial government was trying to evolve a comprehensive system for the smooth supply of water to the people of Lahore, and expressed his satisfaction on progress made in this regard so far.

Shahbaz said the Punjab government was fully aware of the problems being faced by the people of the province due to torturous loadshedding, and assured them that in addition to the provision of generators at tube wells to ensure an uninterrupted supply of potable water, special attention was also being paid to the installation of new tube wells on an emergency basis in areas facing chronic water shortage.

Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz said the provincial government was aware of the sufferings of people caused by power outages, which was why he had set up a camp office to get to know the problems and sentiments of the masses. He said the special committee -

set up under the chairmanship of MNA Mian Marghoob Ahmad - would look into the matter, while another committee under MPA Chaudhry Shahbaz Ahmad would take measures to address the complaints of the people.

The inquiry committee, set up on the instructions of the chief minister to investigate the cause behind foul smelling water in Karim Park, informed the meeting that water from the tube well installed in 2008 had been declared unsuitable for human consumption. The chief minister directed concerned officials to take legal action against those involved in the matter, and handed over the case to the anti-corruption department.

The meeting was also informed that a modern system of electronic monitoring was being evolved to check incidents of theft of diesel from generators installed at tube wells. Shahbaz Sharif told the meeting that an initial amount of Rs100 million had been provided to supply tube wells with diesel. He said the provincial government would provide more funds for the purpose so that tube wells could remain operational. He further said that the masses were facing severe problems due to extremely hot weather and loadshedding, and that in view of this situation the government was making every effort to ensure that water was available on an uninterrupted basis.

Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Mashhood and Provincial Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman were also present during the meeting.Later the chief minister visited various areas of the city to review the shortage of water resulting from power loadshedding. He carried out surprise checks on tube wells, and addressed various public gatherings at Mozang, Sandah, Outfall Road and other areas.

Shahbaz told the crowds that he was with the people and would always be with them, and asked President Asif Ali Zardari why he was punishing the people of Punjab and why uniform loadshedding was not being carried out in the entire country.
